EPILOGUE

The connection between the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill and the Old Mud Meeting House dates back to the early history of both places.

In 1781, a migration of Low Dutch led by Hendrick BANTA III, came to Harrod’s Station, now Harrodsburg, from Conewago, Pennsylvania.  In 1805, three sons of Hendrick BANTA III, Samuel, Jon and Hendrick, followed Elisha Thomas in professing the Shaker faith.

This was the beginning of Pleasant Hill.  On the early Shaker rolls are found such Dutch names as BANTA, VORIS, MONTFORT, WESTERFIELD, BURNET, ERBRYKE, among others, attesting to the many Dutch who joined the Shakers.
