Text Box: The following pictures are from The Old Mud Meeting House/Cemetery in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky.
These pictures were taken in 2007, by me (Alfreda Potrafke).

The Old Mud Meeting House was built in 1800 by the Dutch
Reformed Church. This is an old pioneer house of worship. It began with walls of sturdy uprights, interlaced with mortar and sticks, hence the name ‘Mud House’.

After posting the pictures we took while we were visiting here, I will add a few pages (both text and photos) from a book I purchased about The Old Mud Meeting House. It’s very interesting; and even more-so when you have ancestors who are, or may be part of the
history of this tremendous place.

My mom is from Harrodsburg Kentucky, so even though I did not grow up there, I have been going there all my life and still have family living there. I am very familiar with this area and feel a very special connection to it. I still try to visit there as much as possible. It is beautiful there, with much history to be learned. Family history research there is quite welcome. They have very nice facilities and a wealth of genealogy information to be found. If you are in need of family information from the area, try the local courthouses, historical societies, public libraries, cemeteries, and funeral homes for a start. The people there are always so friendly and seem eager to help in any way they can. I have done a tremendous amount of research in Kentucky, and have learned more than one can imagine about my family history there, as well as my probable family history pertaining to The Mud Meeting House.

Actually, this Old Mud Meeting House is only a few miles from where my grandfather lived with his mother (my great-grandmother, Florence Eden Bonta-Lyons) for many years until their deaths, and as many times as I was there visiting all those years, I never knew this place existed, or anything about my Bonta ancestors. It was a very touching experience for me to go here, just down the road from my grandparents’ home, on Dry Branch Road in Harrodsburg Kentucky. Not to mention how I felt when I learned of the importance between the Bonta’s and Harrodsburg.
